A Virtual Private Network (VPN) is a communications network tunnelled through another network destined for a specific remote network.  A good use of VPN technology would be when a remote worker connects their home office to their company network over the internet.  Another example of VPN use, might be when connecting remote branch offices to their Head Office, allowing all sites to share common resources stored on central servers.
