Backup
Tape backups
are the most common form of automated backup. The tapes are usually rotated on a daily basis in order to provide access to historic data and the backup is performed during hours of low intensity usage. A good backup solution;
- Ensures that mission critical data is protected.
- Is performed by during times of low usage, minimising the impact on performance.
- Provides a method of off-site-storage to protect against a complete site failure.
Offsite backups
Utilise high speed connections which are readily available nowadays at relatively low costs. By using a remote site you effectively ‘mirror’ the data from the main site and, with real-time synchronisation, it is possible for IT Support staff to restore data to the point-in-time at which the failure occurred. Restore operations are more simple than Tape backup procedures. Rather than trawling through previous tapes searching for the correct file version all files can be located from a single management interface.
The benefits of this method of backup are:
- Fully automated
- Protection against site failure
- Ability to restore to point-in-time
- Speed of restore operations

Dell Transport - Haulage / Transport Services
... The backup system provided was cost-effective and fully automated removing the need to worry about running manual backups. They also incorporated our existing files and folders into the new backup meaning that we essentially got two jobs for the price of one. The old backup is now redundant, but I am safe in the knowledge that all the data is secured and backed up continually throughout the day... more
